This deep grey is dyed with tannin derived from chestnut wood.
Wood tannins have been used throughout history to preserve animal hides as leather (the earliest known example of tanned leather is in Pakistan and dates to between 7000 and 3300 BCE), and were also historically used in combination with salts and with other vegetable extracts to colour cloth, and to stabilise other dyes.
